Novelists Joseph and Amanda Boyden travel with the band to isolated Fort Albany, Ont., for the Great Moon Gathering. -- We’re in a 40-person prop plane, high over black spruce and frozen rivers somewhere between Timmins and the coast of James Bay. A frigid night has fallen outside the small windows, and the plane buzzes with the voices of filmmakers and artists, teachers and writers. And all the members of the Tragically Hip. Every time we’re jostled by turbulence, it’s hard not to whisper-sing the Hip’s hit song, Fifty Mission Cap, about the Maple Leafs’ Bill Barilko’s death in a plane crash in the land literally below us.

Toronto, ON – February 27, 2012 – The Tragically Hip will show their true north patriot love with a two day Canada Day Weekend Festival tour. First stop will be June 30th when The Hip celebrate the bi-centennial of the War of 1812 by setting up camp at The Commons at the historic Butler’s Barracks in Niagara On The Lake. Sunday, July 1st the band marches on Oro, Ontario, the heart of cottage country, for a Canada Day show at Burl’s Creek. Set on hundreds of acres, beneath wide open sky, Burl’s Creek’s festival site is the perfect setting for celebrating this nation’s birthday with this
The Tragically Hip along with celebrated novelists Joseph & Amanda Boyden and acclaimed film makers Jennifer Baichwal and Nick de Pencier, traveled to Fort Albany Ontario to participate in the Great Moon Gathering last week.
The annual event, held on the west coast of James Bay in Ontario's pristine Arctic lowlands, gethered in Fort Albany, February 15-17, and included the Cree First Nations of Attawapiskat, Peawanuck, Kashechewan, Moose Factory, and Fort Albany.
