In Violet Light: Track by Track by Gordon Downie

I worked very hard on this record, as did the rest of the guys, toiling in and around what Rick
Groen calls the "collective wisdom of committees." That said, on this album, I tried to honour the inviolate lights of my life.

A Beautiful Thing (3:33)

"You'd better be dying"....
isn't that how most people answer the
phone when it rings at "ungodly" hours?

Another song about a phone call....
inspired by one of my favourite children's stories, Miss Rumphius by Barbara
Cooney
(bought at the finest toy store in America: Stellabella Toys in Cambridge,
Massachusetts)

In this story, Miss (Alice) Rumphius moves through her life from young girl
to old woman,
emulating the life of her grandfather
(to travel the world.... to return to her house by the sea....)
and trying to honour his request:
"You must do something to make the world more beautiful."
