In Violet Light: Track by Track by Gordon Downie
I worked very hard on this record, as did the rest of the guys, toiling in and around what Rick Groen calls the "collective wisdom of committees." That said, on this album, I tried to honour the inviolate lights of my life.

Part I -- The Compass
"Whenever you need me.... I'll be here."
Unconditional love.... every song aspires to it
this one is no exception
This song should almost be embroidered and put over the door
"you can cast your doubts/turn 'em inside-out/hang 'em upside-down/til their
art falls out"
there can be no art without doubt.
(note: anticipate the arc of doubt to art to doubt to take about 48 hours)
Part II -- The Lost
a somebody-found-something-wrong song....
a wartime tune.... a prayer song.... a promise song....
a "first-thing-I'm-gonna-do-when-I-get-home" song....
things I like about this song....
"War isn't for children/war is nothing's enough"
it, briefly, illuminates the Drive-In Elite and one of our
time-honoured traditions:
We celebrate the death of a villain by honking our horns.
"The dream double-bill" -- Jaws and The Dark Canuck
things I don't like about this song....
that it's not "This Flight Tonight," by Joni Mitchell
