fireworks exploding in the distance
Real Audio courtesy of |
The concept of fireworks is a line in the third verse. It sort of deals with the way American pop culture is, the way the music business is, and I guess the way any popular industry is. The idea that there are no true stars anymore because they don't have the time to develop into the stars. So it's fireworks: you look up into the sky and there are the stars and fireworks are kind of like the pop stars that come and go really quickly. On another level, the song explores relationships: between a boy and a girl or two countries or anything. The person you're relating to can all of a sudden turn your whole world upside down and it just doesn't matter. One of the great things about Gord's lyrics is they always work on a number of different levels. In early performances the song was called Bobby Orr. This is Mark [Vreeken] christening our newest songs with a name as we get it down on tape for the first time. This is how we keep track of the new stuff. Sometimes the names stick and sometimes they don't. Gord brought the music and the lyrics in so most of the arranging was already done. This is a five-piece rock song with a little bit of Hammond on the end that Steve played just to round it out. Gord Sinclair
