the crush of the crowd and the power of a song

We were all crammed at the front of the barrier just before the stage. The cool summer evening air blended to a frothy steam above the heads of the overheated swarming crowd. The security, who normally were standing looking over the fans and snatching up crowd surfers like babies out of a ball play-pen, were doing something unusual: Each of them were acting as giant springs- with their hands pressed against the crowd barrier and their feet against the stage! With every wave of desire to get ever closer to the band, the massive crowd was overtaking the anchors holding down the wall. At any moment we all could have flooded out and over, like a dam breaking loose with an angry river. Just then, the slow gentle strums of Gift Shop began, and the lights went out. The crowd seemed soothed for that moment as though pacified by the change in tempo from the previous song. Then, as the powerful verse begins
