The Hip at Manchester (UK) 199?

Been an (English) Hip fan for quite some time now. I've been to hundreds of shows in my 40 years, and whenever people ask me what was my favourite show, I can honestly say, without a doubt, it was the Hip at Manchester university in 1991 (?). Can't be sure of the date as I can't find the ticket (if we ever had one!). In a nutshell, a friend of mine 'pulled a Canadian girl at a nightclub in Preston Lancashire one Friday night, and the next morning she gave him a tape she'd made (as you did in those days). On one side was George Thoroughgood and on the the flip side was 'Up To Here'. He never saw the girl again, but kept the tape. That tape was never off our student house stereo! We were all hooked. Not long after, I spotted a tiny ad in Sounds (music paper) for the Hip at Manchester Uni. About 10 of us piled on the train to Manchester and found the Manchester Uni. Arriving at the venue, the poster for the show outside had a big sticker on it saying 'FREE ENTRY' - as noone had come along to see them (apart from us!!). We piled into the venue (full of beer and excitement) to find it empty apart from about 5 students, quetly sipping their beers in the corner. We really didn't think the show would go ahead - but then the band came on. They played the show just for us. It was INCREDIBLE! They played like they were playing to 10,000, not 10. We danced and sung like lunatics all night. If my memory serves me right, one of our gang 'danced his head' into a stage monitor, split his head open and had to go to the local casualty unit! What a night! After there encores (yes encores!) we invited ourselves backstage (there was no one there to stop us) to find the band surrounded by stacks of beers. We chatted until it was time for the last train - they thanked us for coming, and told us to take as much beer as we could carry - so we obliged them . Unbelievable night! I will never forget it. To top it all, later in the same year (I think) they came back to the same venue to support a band called 'Flowered Up'. Of course we all attended, but there was some kind of problem with the stage being too small for both band equipment. S0... they didn't play. The road manager (John I think his name was) saw our disappointment and told us that if we could make it to London (The Astoria) that coming Friday he would put us on the guest list (all ten of us!) for tickets AND T-shirts. We all made the journey to London and he was true to his word! Amazing night!!!! Amazing band. Saw them recently at the Forum, and they were just as exciting to watch. I have some snaps from the Manchester Uni show that I'll try and post if anyone's interested. Some are already at this link...http://www.dimeadozen.org/torrents-details.php?id=312857&page=1#startcomments Cheers!
