Hip at Woodstock '99

I have seen the Hip 10 times since 1994, and every show has been terrific. The most memorable show, though, that I was a part of was their set at Woodstock '99 in Rome, NY. My friend and I had driven thousands of kilometers from Calgary to New York, via Montreal, to take in our first real festival experience. Although Woodstock '99 turned out to be more infamous than legendary, there were some performances that really blew my mind. But, nothing was more powerful or uplifting than when the Hip opened the second day on the main stage before a crowd that numbered near 50,000...at least. Gazing at the crowd, all you could see were hundreds of Canadian flags flying high and proud as the Hip ripped through a killer set. Out there in the oppressive New York heat, amid 200,000 or more people, we all created a mini Canada for 45 minutes or so. I don't know if I've ever felt so proud to be a Canadian than at that show.
